How WrestleMania 40 Will Ruin Triple H's WWE Story
Though there are some out there who insist that the emergence of 'The Great One' on the blue show last Friday was simply WWE's way of reacting to a heartbreaking Punk injury or the already noted dreadful McMahon story, the truth is that this utterly baffling development was apparently a part of the plan from as early as January 3 - back when Rock signed his deal to come back "home".
Why, then, would WWE still insist on having their most adored babyface win the Rumble at a time when Punk vs. Rollins was still being reported as the World Heavyweight Championship 'Mania encounter?
Well, judging from Dave Meltzer's comments on Wrestling Observer Radio recently, it seems very few were actually aware of Rocky's impending in-ring comeback being official, with only the likes of WWE President Nick Khan, and Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel knowing about the plan - "It was way above the head of everybody in WWE other than Nick", was how Meltzer put it.
So, if that was the case - and that's still a speculative "if" at this point, it must be stressed - then it doesn't half make Triple H and his team look like fools for committing to the Rhodes/Reigns Rumble visual that all-but confirmed a 'Mania 39 rematch.
And even if this was just all part of a grand plan to "Daniel Bryan" the Rumble winner, congrats lads, you've also managed to completely undermine what could have been one of the most exciting showdowns of all time, make winning the Rumble feel like an inconsequential feat, and potentially turn Rocky heel for what will likely be his final-ever match in the process.
The whole thing just stinks of right hand not knowing what the left one is doing. And it will be a rather embarrassed 'Cerebral Assassin' who is left picking up the pieces should his poster boy project be shoved into a spot lower down the 'Mania XL card in the end.
Maybe we're all just being worked, though, and a mind-blowing, 'Mania-saving swerve is on its way this Thursday...
