How WWE Are Quietly Building Their Next Main Event Megastar
What we're experiencing now is the polar opposite of Drew's original 'Chosen One' push, when the green Scot was thrust into a spotlight he wasn't anywhere near ready for. Endorsed as a "future World Champion" by Vince McMahon himself, WWE literally told their audience that the developing McIntyre had been handpicked for a major main event role, yet he never hit the heights that the company expected of him.
Drew quickly became Intercontinental Champion, but lacked the charisma, swagger, and in-ring fluidity to fill such a spotlight. Though he developed, McIntyre was given too much, too soon, and ultimately floundered because of it, as the company reneged on his initial push, saddled him with a deathly losing streak, and relegated him to a lowly spot-filling role prior to his June 2014 release.
There have been no such issues with the new McIntyre. Called-up as a midcarder, he has slowly advanced his position through careful storytelling, and the writers' restraint is welcome. The last thing they'd want to do is burn the audience out on a potential megastar through overexposure, so kudos to them from learning from the mistakes of the past.
Today's Drew McIntyre is lightyears beyond the over-pushed rookie of old. His 2014 release was the best thing to happen to him, as he spent his time away from wrestling's biggest stage building himself into something resembling 'The Chosen One' McMahon dearly wanted him to be five years prior. An impressive physical transformation was mirrored in his performance skills, as the hard-working Scot tightened every nut and bolt in his locker, eventually returning to WWE as the best possible version of himself, and more importantly, a star.
Now, the writers are the only thing keeping McIntyre from the stratosphere. The way they've handled him thus far suggests he's a major priority, so let's hope that continues, and he eventually becomes the main event fixture he is finally equipped to be.
He's too good to go down in history as another Dolph Ziggler.
