5. The Mega Powers vs. The Alliance To End Hulkamania - Uncensored 1996
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEWQSh3YAFk The Doomsday Cage Match Sometimes a novelty gimmick match can work extremely well. Case in point: Hell in a Cell. However sometimes, gimmick matches can be clouded in confusion, often when the rules aren't entirely clear. This was especially true of the Doomsday cage match that main evented WCW Uncensored in 1996. The concept of the match was for the Mega Powers to fight through three cages, each with various wrestlers trying to "end Hulkamania" in each cage. The idea doesn't sound too bad does it? Well it was. The structure itself looked as though it would've probably worked better as a cheaply made climbing frame for a kids adventure park. It was clearly unstable from the start, as each time the participants stood on the wire mesh floor, it looked as though it would embarrassingly collapse under the immense weight of everyone trampling around. This resulted in a distinct lack of moves in fear of the floor hilariously caving in - that meant the entire battle consisted primarily of punches and angsty yet not too hard shoves. Ric Flair couldn't display his technical prowess or any of his quirks, Arn Anderson couldn't execute an explosive spinebuster and Lex Luger couldn't pull off any high impact power moves. It caused complete and utter restriction, and this combined with confusion in terms of what the aim of the match was supposed to be resulted in a dangerous, gimmicky, awful mess. After Hogan & Savage made it down to the second level, Ric Flair and Arn Anderson were (apparently) eliminated and the commentators began to forget the rules themselves, audibly asking "how do you win this match?" The proceeding action consisted of Kevin Sullivan dangling from the cage-side scaffolding like he was begging for attention. Eventually, The Mega Powers exited the cage after yet another 'enthralling' bout of restricted brawling. Complete and utter confusion became the order of the day, as even officials were wondering whether The Mega Powers were supposed to have won the match by escaping the cage. Taskmaster and Luger ended up in the ring with Hogan and Savage, brawling into nothingness, towards no objective, pointlessly ambling towards a conclusion that was not yet determined. When Z-Gangster and Ultimate Solution eventually turned up, Hogan and Savage were dragged back to the hilarious/ominous structure and another brawl erupted in the ring at the bottom of the cage. But even when the bout was taking place in a proper ring, it still maintained it's awfulness and aimlessness, as Flair and Anderson returned to the cage to make it four on two. The battle ended comically in a flurry of frying pan shots to the head, after The Mega Powers were aided by The Booty Man (whoever he is). Then, providing one last moment of hilarity, Hogan and Savage were about to leave and Macho Man suddenly leaped after temporarily forgetting what he was supposed to do - into a pin at the last minute, to give The Mega Powers the big win. But in reality it was a big loss for Hogan and Savage, who were in that moment shadows of their former selves.
