The Worst Moments...
5. Dungeon Of Doom
WWE.comThe Dungeon of Doom was formed in May of 1995, and was lead by its supposed Taskmaster, the ever-evil Kevin Sullivan. The entire purpose of Sullivans group, from the outset, was to destroy Hulkamania -- even forming a pact with the Four Horsemen, dubbed the Alliance to End Hulkamania. The villainous Dungeon originally consisted of Kamala, the Shark, Meng, and the Zodiac. Most of the members of the stable were former foes or allies of the Hulksters from his days in the World Wrestling Federation. There was, however, a new threat to Hulkamania that joined the group -- the Giant. Currently known as the Big Show, he originally claimed to be the son of André the Giant who now sought retribution on the Immortal One for defeating his father so many years ago. The whole feud was laughable, and brought a bit of the cartoon world of the Federation to the more conventional southern wrasslin company. Kevin Sullivan, who was WCWs booker at the time, took a lot of flak from the companys fans who wanted to see their more traditional wrestling product as opposed to these overblown caricatures. Sullivan, in a shoot interview with Kayfabe Commentaries from last year, explains that, The Dungeon of Doom was my way of making Hogan relax. He wasnt going to wrestle anybody that was semi-serious character at that time you have a group of characters -- cartoons -- that he had been drawing money with his whole career How do I get him to stop wrestling cartoons and then start wrestling the Horsemen nWo? Because I saw what was evolving I had to ease him off the smack. It was that simple -- I had to ease him off.
Despite the Taskmasters reasoning and explanation, it was still an atrocious angle, and one that fans had no interest in. However, it did provide numerous classic moments -- for all the wrong reasons -- including but not limited to, the Monster Truck Sumo match at Halloween Havoc 95, the Yeti, and this bizarre promo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhwHPiOKQyI By Sullivans own admission, during the aforementioned interview, Hogan was not receiving the standing ovations that he was used to, and it's no doubt that the Dungeon of Doom storyline was no help.
