Impact Wrestling Planning World Cup Event
Wrestlers from Japan and Mexico will travel to the Impact Zone later this year.
Impact Wrestling have a long history in collaborating with other international promotions. Working with NJPW saw wrestlers like Kazuchika Okada and Hiroshi Tanahashi moonlight on their roster, and the old World X Cup tournaments gathered exciting talent from Mexico, Japan, and beyond to compete under the TNA banner.
It has been several years since Impact's last major inter-promotional event, but that's about to change. According to this week's Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Jeff Jarrett intends on running a World Cup event later this year, and will call on wrestlers from AAA and Pro Wrestling NOAH to do so.
Held in October, the event would take the form of a trios tournament, but the details are far from finalised at the moment. There's no word on whether or not wrestlers from ITV's stop-start World Of Sport revival (with whom Impact have a working relationship) will be involved either.
Multiple Impact stars have already wrestled for NOAH in 2017, so news of this World Cup doesn't come as a huge surprise. While plenty of other promotions are running tournaments this year, nobody else is producing an international trios competition, which should help Impact's stand out.
