Jerry Lawler 'It's Good To Be The King' DVD Review: 17 Interesting Observations
8. The First Big Lawsuit With WWE
Memphis Wrestling achieved outstanding success for close to 20 years with Lawler as its leader. However, when the mid 1980s and wrestling's first boom arrived, Memphis started having their top talent plucked by the likes of the NWA and WWF as the big boys could offer more money and global exposure. The likes of Jimmy Hart and 'Macho Man' Randy Savage left Memphis for WWF, leaving Jerry's company in tatters. WWE even tried underhanded tactics to steal Memphis Wrestling's business. They would arrive in surrounding towns like Nashville and Jackson advertising 'The King' on their show. Obviously, fans of the product from there would assume this would be Lawler when it was in fact WWE's own version, the gimmick placed on Harley Race. Lawler filed a lawsuit against Vince McMahon's WWE and the bigger fish was forced to hold their gates up in Nashville.
