Jerry Lawler 'It's Good To Be The King' DVD Review: 17 Interesting Observations
7. The Move To WWF
After Lawler became the AWA World Heavyweight Champion, a meeting of all the promoters that were trying to fight Vince McMahon and Ted Turner was held. The Superclash PPV was thought up where Lawler would face WCCW Champion Kerry Von Erich to unify the belts. A few years later in 1993, Jerry Jarrett left Memphis for WWE. Lawler followed suit. The territory days officially came to an end. Jarrett was brought in just incase Vince lost that trial against the government that dominated the agenda back then. He thought he would be slipping straight into McMahon's shoes. One of the first jobs Vince passed onto Jarrett was to find a new announcer and Lawler was the first name that cropped up. A no brainer for J.J. Originally, King was only meant to fill the position for one week, McMahon promised him that he would have a replacement found by the time the next RAW rolled round. However, Vince and King would fill the role until Jim Ross came back to WWE to fill the play-by-play commentator's chair. Ross arrives on the scene and claims that he and his most famed broadcast colleague never had a production meeting. Everything they did together was completely organic. And as Daniel Bryan showed last year, the most organic things are more than often the best things in professional wrestling.
