Jim Ross’ 10 Greatest WWE Signings Ever

2. The Rock

WWE

The most electrifying man in sports entertainment is another third generation WWE superstar, following in the footsteps of grandfather High Chief Peter Maivia and his father, Rocky Johnson. His father trained him after an unsuccessful American football career, and Ross decided to make the decision to hire The Rock in 1996 after a series of tryout matches.

JR described the rookie Rock as "a bright, broke guy who was also very motivated, feeling like he was going to be exceptional from day 1." Identifying that he had a good look, excellent physical attributes and good charisma, The Rock debuted under the name of Rocky Maivia at Survivor Series 1996 - as a clean-cut babyface. Though accepted for several months, his character was eventually badly received by crowds, who didn't like this archetype being shoved in their faces. His subsequent heel turn would see him develop the first parts of his 'Rock' character, before he eventually grew into the Great One who conquered the industry and beyond.
