3. The Shirt Thrown Back... Twice!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNEA3eTkBlQ The biggest damnation of a superstar's popularity has to be the audience physically rejecting your ring gear. A wrestler throwing a shirt to a fan, only to have it thrown back, has to be a painful rejection. From a fan point of view, who wouldn't want to go to a WWE show and come away with a physical pice of memorabilia from a WWE superstar? Even if it was a lowly jobber it'd still be cool to walk away with a part of the show! If someone hates you so much that they physically reject your gift, that's pretty embarrassing, it is beyond heel heat, it's a sign of genuine loathing. When this first happened to John Cena at 2006's ECW One Night Stand it was just about understandable. That crowd wasn't really a WWE crowd, it was a rabid ECW crowd. Still, it was pretty awkward for Cena to see his merchandise spat upon and ripped up before being thrown back at him. Even more awkward was when his merchandise got chucked back in the ring at a Raw in 2011. This was WWE fans, it was meant to be Cena's people, he was the star of the show. On live national television he had been exposed to be far less popular than WWE portrayed him as. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0db9SCz7MQ
