This will be the first time Mox has wrestled on an official New Japan show since 17 October 2021, when he and Eddie Kingston fought Suzuki-gun's Minoru Suzuki and Lance Archer at the company's STRONG tapings in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A few weeks later, Moxley took a hiatus from wrestling to enter an inpatient alcohol treatment program for a couple of months, before returning to AEW happier and healthier for the 19 January episode of Dynamite.
A two-time IWGP United States Champion, Moxley's last run with the strap ended on an AEW Dynamite defeat to Lance Archer in a 21 July Texas Deathmatch. Archer subsequently dropped it to Hiroshi Tanahashi 24 days later, meaning the belt returned to Japan for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic's onset.
