Kinda hard to expect anything else here, no? The pre-eminent WWE match of the 1980s set the standard for major clashes of the future, relying on rapid-fire two counts and a generally-relentless pace to augment the story of a revenge-fueled comeback. Some younger fans seem to not understand why this match is all that special. I say that's their loss.

For fourteen months, by hook or crook, Savage retained his "Intercontinental Heavyweight" championship, and had run into Steamboat in late 1986. Fearing that Steamboat had the power to pull the sword from the stone, Savage executed felonious assault on the larynx of "The Dragon", using the ring bell as part of the barrage. When Steamboat triumphantly fought his way back, the tough-talking Savage acted as though he'd seen a ghost.

The match mirrored the story: Savage thinks he's put Steamboat away, only for the resilient Dragon to come back with even more fire and resolve. Seeing Steamboat cradle and pin Savage off of a slam was cathartic, emotional on the fronts of Steamboat's grand achievement and Savage's crushing defeat alike. There was no cynicism to be found - to watch it with full context, few matches will ever make you care more.
