7. Hiroshi Tanahashi Vs. Michael Elgin (5 August)

Rating: ***¾

There was an element of disappointment with Elgin vs. Tanahashi, as a potentially excellent clash was ultimately let down by a botchy finish that required 'Big Mike' to pin himself when 'The High-Flying Star' slipped on a roll-up.

It's a real shame, because the action leading up to it was fantastic. This is largely owing to their chemistry. Tana and Elgin have history as both partners and opponents, and this helped elevate the bout beyond its straightforward story of brute force vs. experience and versatility. That Tanahashi chose not to work Elgin's suspected torn bicep is curious, but it still finished as one of the legend's better G1 bouts.
