Shingo Takagi's G1 Climax will not be defined by his relatively low score nor what he'd kayfabe consider to be a disappointing step up from his glorious Best Of The Super Juniors run that preceded it. It'll be defined by unbelievable matches, typified most of all by his last two headline bangers with Tetsuya Naito and Tomohiro Ishii.
Against his LIJ boss, Shingo only fell short at the last. Here, he mirrored the hardest man in the f*cking world and even managed to beat him at a game that wasn't just his but theirs.
Artful in its simplicity, the tricks up the sleeves of both spilled forth from every bracing lariat. Stereo one-count kickouts after life-threatening german suplexes. Stereo pop-up no-sells of devastating assaults. Stereo explosions of sweat as their tank-like frames hit one another, full force, in the name not of scoring points but scoring with strikes strong enough to somehow topple a force as indestructible as they were.
This was the G1 Climax, bottled, and it was f*cking sensational.
