Nobody Will Do It For You: The Rise And Fall Of #DIY
9. The Rise And Fall Of #DIY
The match they had at the Cruiserweight Classic was part of the reason they earned a shot at tag team champions The Revival at Takeover: Brooklyn II. Just before that Match Of The Year contender, Gargano was backstage when Ciampa arrived with new t-shirts.
"You're always going on and on about how we've done things our own way."
Though they failed to win the titles that night, the newly named #DIY had such incredible chemistry with The Revival that fans were begging to see more from the four. A two-out-of-three falls match was set for Takeover: Toronto.
A storytelling masterclass that was filled with low-key innovation, and homages to such greats as The Hart Foundation and Eddie Guerrero, both teams entered sudden-death with an already hot crowd and showed them that they'd saved the best for last.
Counters and reversals were the name of the game, and near-falls were broken at the last second. With the momentum swinging back and forth like a pendulum, both teams tried each others' finishers for a near fall. A series of quick pin attempts led to Gargano locking in the Gargano Escape on Dash.
Dawson tried to make the save but Ciampa took him down into a bridging arm-bar. For a moment The Revival held on, literally holding each other's hands to stop the tap. But the pain was too much and they tapped together.
In WWE's 2016 Match Of The Year, #DIY had taken the top prize of the tag division.
Sadly they wouldn't hold onto the titles for very long. After prevailing in their Takeover rematch against The Revival and defending at live events and on the show, the team went up against monster team The Authors Of Pain at Takeover: San Antonio. The crowd wanted to believe and cheered like never before, but the monsters took the titles.
A rematch on NXT was interrupted when The Revival interfered, costing #DIY their chance at regaining the titles. This led to a triple-threat elimination match at Takeover: Orlando between all three teams.
Once bitter enemies, #DIY and The Revival initially teamed up to stand a chance against the monsters, including a memorable spot with mix-and-match finishers. Ultimately unable to keep their animosity toward each other in check, both teams turned on each other and soon fell before the onslaught of AOP.
