One MIND-BLOWING Secret From Every WWE Royal Rumble

2013 - John Morrison Was Rumoured To Be A Surprise Entrant

John Morrison

This was a strange one.

John Morrison left WWE, as the company itself acknowledged, on November 29, 2011. He wasn’t released; his contract had expired, and as he revealed to Steve Austin on his podcast in 2015, his neck was banged up and he was creatively frustrated.

He’d been in WWE for a long time, felt stale, and had done everything he seemed capable of doing. Never a main event-level talent, Morrison was good for a good midcard match, but had done that endless loop over and over again.

It was reported in the January 28, 2013 Observer that “the word within wrestling is that Morrison will be in the Rumble as a surprise”.

What?

John Morrison didn’t seem to fit the mystery cameo criteria at all. He had only missed just over a year of TV, meaning there hadn’t been anywhere near enough to time miss him and bask in any nostalgia. And, not to be too harsh, it wasn’t as if there was any fervent clamour for his full-time return. Does he even get a pop?

Wrestlers are very paranoid, gossipy people. They think everybody is working them in some way. They are quick to latch onto any narrative whatsoever. This makes sense of the reasoning Dave provided: “Morrison is only working the first night of the three Dragon Gate shows in California”.

A few wrestlers who talked to Dave must have connected some dots here, and jumped to a poorly thought-out conclusion. They might have been high - and on that subject, the Godfather was 2013’s actual mystery guest.
