One MIND-BLOWING Secret From Every Year Of WWE History

32. 1993 - Sabu’s Failed Tryout

Sabu was pivotal to the success of ECW. A (selectively) superb and utterly striking wrestler, he was emblematic of the promotion’s identity. He was rough and uneven and didn’t give a toss, an enigmatic presence who could not fit in anywhere else, ultra-violent, lurid, untenable. A firework set off in the wrong place.

He, too, was close to changing the timeline.

In October ‘93, he was given a tryout - and because he was selectively brilliant, he apparently had a nightmare against Scott Taylor (Scotty 2 Hotty!). Consequently, he was not asked back. If he’d made it, there are no vivid, crazed pictures of his table wreckages in the magazines that open up the endless possibilities of the form.

Ironically, almost one year later exactly, Sabu had caught on to such an extent that a “We want Sabu” sign caused an uproar at an Anaheim WWF house show. It sparked a chant, one so distracting that road agent Jack Lanza was dispatched to confiscate it.

A quite incredible amount of change unfolded across 365 days.
