Owen - Hart Of Gold DVD Review: 14 Things You Should Know

9. It Was Almost Bret Vs. Bruce Instead Of Bret Vs. Owen In 1994

The Owen Hart and Bret Hart rivalry that dominated WWF Television from the end of 1993 through to the end of 1994 almost never happened. Vince McMahon€™s original plan was for Bret to have a one off match with his elder brother Bruce Hart instead. It would have still been based around jealousy of Bret, but Owen wasn€™t scheduled to be involved.

With Bret aware that Owen was intending on leaving, he made the call to go to Vince McMahon and refuse the match with Bruce, because €œIf I'm gonna do something with my brother, the only brother I can do it with is Owen€.

Imagine if we hadn€™t gotten that Bret and Owen feud. It was the highlight of 1994 and gave the company a tremendous story arc, resulting in the best WrestleMania opener of all time and an excellent steel cage main event title match at SummerSlam.

Luckily, Vince McMahon saw that Owen was a name to keep in the company, and so he gave him the chance to do the program and the fans were rewarded with the best sibling rivalry in wrestling history.
