Rampage Review: 6 Ups & 5 Downs

3. It's Surprisingly Serious At Times

Rampage Dwayne Johnson

Perhaps the most shocking thing about the entire movie is that it's not quite the self-aware, gloriously dumb B-movie the trailers seemed to imply, but it actually takes itself oddly seriously at times.

Yes, there are plenty of wink-wink nods to the audience about the inherent absurdity of the premise, but there's an odd, unexpected focus on the "bromance" between The Rock and his gorilla pal George, and large chunks of the film are played completely straight.

It's also surprisingly violent for a PG-13 movie, with numerous characters receiving grisly deaths which are then awkwardly edited-around to avoid that terrible, terrible R-rating.

The film would've clearly been more effective if it was better in-touch with its silliness, and while it does manage this in its better moments, overall it's a good deal more po-faced than it should've been.
