Ranking 10 WWE Matches That Turned Wrestlers Into Superstars
5. Macho Man Vs. Ricky Steamboat - WrestleMania III
The legacy of "Macho Man" Randy Savage to more casual wrestling fans might be that of sequined robes and gravelly catchphrases, but it should never be forgotten that Savage was extremely dedicated to his in-ring craft.
The reason many people first fell in love with him had nothing to do with his glittery headbands and drawn-out "Oh yeahs." They fell in love with his athletic, passionate wrestling style. And what better showcase for those skills than 1987's Match of the Year against Ricky Steamboat.
This match for the Intercontinental Championship might be the greatest match in the history of WrestleMania. And it didn't require a steel cage, or a special guest referee, or a whole host of home improvement equipment. It was just two guys telling an entrancing story in the ring, displaying equal amounts of heart and technical prowess.
The fans may not have tuned in to watch Randy and Ricky -- they showed up to see Hulk Hogan outmuscle Andre the Giant, of course -- but this match is a testament to what can be achieved by two wrestlers hellbent on outperforming their spot on the card. Sometimes, they come out the other end a superstar.
