As the big dog that ran the yard, 'Big Evil' was undoubtedly the blue brand's top babyface all throughout 2003, battling the likes of Big Show, Brock Lesnar (sometimes Big Show and Brock Lesnar) and Kurt Angle in matches that have gone down in SmackDown history.
This year, however, was most significant for the long-term feud he was embroiled in with the Chairman of the Board himself, as Vince McMahon went out his way to make the fan-favorite Deadman's life a living hell and even cost him the WWE Championship.
The fact that this rivalry was built upon Mr. McMahon's distaste for 'Taker saving Stephanie from his wrath on multiple occasions really benefited it as it ran across multiple storylines at the time - and it was one from which the creative team could ultimately draw upon 'The Phenom's tumultuous history with 'The Boss' for backup.
It was a year that saw 'Taker become the most human he had ever been, and that also resulted in a ton of bland programs with A-Train and Big Show - but, in a way, that needed to happen in order to set the wheels in motion for 'The Deadman's return.
