7. WrestleMania 14

Fair warning, this entry gets a boost simply due to historical significance.

WrestleMania 14 wasn’t huge on in-ring quality, but it delivered in two very important ways.

First, it unleashed the Austin Era on us, as “Stone Cold” Steve Austin won his first world title by defeating Shawn Michaels in his last match (for about four years) to close out the PPV. His victory came with the help of special referee Mike Tyson, whose presence elevated Mania into the public eye in a huge way, giving WWF a ton of mainstream attention.

As a result of all of this, WWF would almost immediately overtake WCW in the ratings battle and by the end of 1998 would be running away with the Monday Night War.

When you can say that about one PPV, you’ve got to give it high marks. The Austin/Michaels match was really good, and a couple undercard matches held up their end of the bargain.
