5. The Authority

Before Seth Rollins, Randy Orton was once seen as the crown jewel of the WWE by the McMahon family. Triple H went to great lengths to ensure that Orton walked out of SummerSlam 2013 the new WWE champion, turning both men heel for the first time in many years in the process.

Despite getting off to a strong start that summer, any excitement over The Authority becoming a thing quickly faded based off how they were handled in the months that followed. Orton, in particular, was booked to look weak as world champion more often than not and had an incredibly dull title reign.

It's safe to say that his championship defenses on pay-per-view against Daniel Bryan, Big Show and John Cena rank among the most boring in recent WWE history.

Orton was quietly moved into the background in the group after losing the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 30. He actually didn't get interesting again until he broke away from the faction that fall and transitioned back into a babyface role.

In other words, he was positioned as a main event player for the year-plus that he was with The Authority (or at least initially), but this was a rare instance where he felt held back by the stable and not supported the same way he ways with other alliances on this list.
