This was perhaps the most significant of all of Chris Jericho's returns, in that it followed his longest ever hiatus. The 'Ayatollah of Rock'n'Rolla' had been absent from our screens for well over two years after John Cena sent him packing back in mid-2005 (but it felt like longer).

And when WWE began airing cryptic vignettes at the tail end of 2007 (which weren't really all that cryptic, given that nobody was in any doubt as to what they meant), fans were beside themselves with anticipation.

It really did feel like Jericho was saving us from something, mainly because the early part of the year had been so dull that the company desperately needed an injection of star-power - and they got it.
