Ranking Every Men's WWE Royal Rumble Match Of The 2010s
3. 2016
This match was the first truly great Rumble match in a looong time. The early-to-mid 2010s had consistently spewed out disappointing matches, so to have one that was this damn good was a genuine shock
With the WWE Championship on the line for the first time in 25 years, champion Roman Reigns entered at #1 and did his best to fend off the onslaught of superstars that would follow him. Ironically, his most significant obstacle would be met less than five minutes after his own entrance, and it came in the form of one of the most impactful debuts the company has ever seen: AJ Styles.
Arguably the best wrestler in the world following a fruitful NJPW stint, Styles had spent his whole career on the independent circuit and was looking for the big leagues, and who better to represent the big leagues than Roman Reigns himself.
Styles lasted 20 minutes in the Royal Rumble, an impressive enough feat until you remember that this was his debut match. It just goes to show how invested Vince was in 'The Phenomenal One'.
The rest of the match went smoothly, with The Wyatt Family clearing house, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn having an intense brawl and the League Of Nations beating down everyone's least favourite babyface. We even saw, albeit for a fleeting moment, some magic between Triple H and Bray Wyatt.
The only downside to this match is probably the winner, with Triple H eliminating fan favourite Dean Ambrose to win from the #30 spot. This was all done to set up Roman's coronation at WrestleMania, a match that needed to happen despite literally no one wanting it to.
The match would signify a new era for WWE, with debutant AJ Styles going on to define the WWE main event scene for years to come afterwards.
