4. Triple H Vs. The Rock - Rebellion 1999
Title: WWF Championship
Match Time: 22:56
The year 1999 was one of great change in the WWF. The Attitude Era was in full swing and places at the top of the card were hotly contested as the booking became more and more erratic.
The top strap changed hands 11 times that year. Prior to that, in the 36-year history of belt, the most title changes in a calendar year was six, in 1997, which itself was a pretty high strike rate. The 11 mark is a record that still stands today.
The Rock and Triple H accounted for four of those title changes, as their simultaneous rise to the top of the card had them butting heads at every turn throughout the year.
After losing his very first World Title reign after just three weeks to Vince McMahon of all people, The Game wasn’t going to let his second chance slip through his hands again, and it showed.
The Rock was already The Most Electrifying Man in Sports Entertainment at this point. He was on Steve Austin’s level.
For Triple H, he was on the cusp, but still trying to prove himself as a genuine, long-term, main event player. His performance showed that.
The Rock had great chemistry with the King of Kings and this was 20-minutes of that on full display. Great storytelling, some shenanigans that fit the era they were in, and a finish that made both wrestlers look good.
