In 2011, the match was changed to having 40 participants, which made the match just that bit too long. The Royal Rumble winner also hadn't won their title match since 2007, and was now not even guaranteed to close the show at Wrestlemania. In fact, Del Rio's title match was the opening match of Wrestlemania 27, where he would take on World Heavyweight Champion Edge. Del Rio had only been on WWE television for a matter of months, but had been heavily pushed by injuring several superstars - including Christian, who was in Edge's corner. Del Rio spent the majority of the match working over Edge's arm in preparation for the Cross Armbreaker, but Edge's countering would allow him to hit the Spear and defeat Alberto. The match may not be that memorable in itself, but it would prove memorable because it was the final match for Edge, who was forced to retire out of the blue soon after.
