2. 2000 – Triple H Vs. The Rock
I know I’ve criticised run-ins and screwy finishes
previously on this list, but when they’re executed as well as we saw with this
entry, it doesn’t detract from the match at all.
Here, with Triple H, Vince McMahon and his accompanying cronies seemingly screwing the Rock out of the WWF title, the Great One was in dire need of assistance. A chair shot from McMahon had left the Rock downed, to the point that Triple H could hardly lift his opponent to hit the Pedigree that would no doubt bring him victory.
Of course, what he and his buddies hadn’t accounted for was a certain Stone Cold Steve Austin.
With the situation hopeless, that trademark sound of smashing glass filled the arena and sent the fans into raptures. Austin, out of action at the time nursing a neck injury, soon came striding to the ring, chair in hand, before delivering rasping shots to Triple H, Pat Patterson and Gerald Briscoe in a whirlwind of steel on skull.
Upon reaching the ring, Vince and Shane were next to suffer the very same fate, before one final parting shot to Triple H for good measure had well and truly evened the playing field. The Rock would do the rest, recovering to hit the People’s Elbow and reclaim the WWF Championship.
Other main events may have seen better displays in terms of the actual wrestling portion, but for the drama and excitement caused by Austin’s emergence, this goes down as one of the greatest Backlash memories in history.
