1. 2004 – Chris Benoit Vs. Shawn Michaels Vs. Triple H
In top spot we have the WrestleMania XX rematch between
Chris Benoit, Shawn Michaels and Triple H for the World Heavyweight
Championship—in a match that may even have outdone the original.
Here, we saw some brilliant storytelling throughout the contest. Benoit seemed to be far more in control in this match, as he should have since he was the champion. Not only was he holding the title up in the faces of his opponents before the match, but his masterful ability to pull a submission from out of nowhere made him seem almost unbeatable once the action was underway.
Our dose of drama arrived when Michaels locked Benoit in the Sharpshooter, prompting Earl Hebner to sprint to the ring to replace the downed referee. Naturally, the Canadian crowd recognised this scene from somewhere before and responded with deafening boos, as well as a resounding “You Screwed Bret” chant for the guilty parties in the ring.
This time though, there was to be no Screwjob. Benoit would hang on and later in the match lock Shawn in the same Sharpshooter to a thunderous ovation from the Alberta crowd. After a lengthy struggle, and with Triple H crawling back into the ring, Michaels could hold on no longer, submitting and allowing the champ to retain.
History may have since tainted the contest, but for the drama, storytelling, and the quality of the action in this 30-minute affair, it’s almost impossible not to regard this as the greatest Backlash main event in history.
