Money in the Bank 2011 wasn’t just the best showing in the PPV’s history, it was one of the best all-round displays of any WWE event in recent years.

Much of that was thanks to the main event angle, in which CM Punk, who’d been threatening to walk out of the company with the WWE Championship in tow, faced John Cena for the right to do just that. But the story became so much more than that, largely because nobody was entirely sure whether Punk’s talk of leaving was a work or not.

Add in the fact that this one took place in Punk’s hometown of Chicago—a great wrestling city on any night—not to mention the excellent match itself and a finish that was played out to perfection, and it’s easy to see why this show is rated so highly.

Plus, we haven’t even touched upon the rest of the card yet. Earlier in the evening, Daniel Bryan would win the SmackDown Money in the Bank briefcase, laying the foundations for his main event push, before Christian and Randy Orton squared off for the World Heavyweight Championship in the second installment of their excellent feud that spanned the summer of 2011.

Long story short, it’ll likely be a long time before any Money in the Bank show comes close to eclipsing the 2011 rendition.
