Ranking Every WWE Royal Rumble Since 2010
2. 2019
2019's event saw the second Women's Rumble match and a much larger card on display for the WWE Universe.
The event was opened by Becky Lynch and Asuka, in a stellar bout for the SmackDown Women's Championship, which saw 'The Empress of Tomorrow' retain her title via submission over 'The Man'. Shortly after that match, Daniel Bryan retained his WWE Championship against AJ Styles, meaning that Bryan would have a target on his back after the Men's Rumble match. Another man with a target would be 'The Beast Incarnate' - Brock Lesnar defeated Finn Bálor in a fantastic match that displayed 'The Demon King's' amazing in-ring ability, as well as Lesnar's aptitude for working with smaller superstars.
The titular matches of the night saw Seth Rollins overcome the odds to win the Royal Rumble, as well as Becky Lynch taking over Lana's entry slot to surprise every woman in the ring and win the Rumble, setting her on a crash course with Ronda Rousey. Lynch and Rousey would go on to feud until WrestleMania 35, with Charlotte being added into the mix in order to carry out the first-ever women's 'Mania main event.
Rollins' victory also set him up for a groundbreaking match against Lesnar, one that the 'Beastslayer' managed to win and become Universal Champion for the first time in his career. The support that Rollins had from the WWE Universe was nuclear, as he was more over than he had ever been in his career. His victory to close out the show had the fans in Phoenix leaving the arena happy, which was a rare occurrence in the year beforehand.
Also, the Men's Rumble match saw a return for Jeff Jarrett after 20 years, as well as various appearances from NXT and NXT UK superstars. Johnny Gargano, Pete Dunne and Aleister Black all arrived on the main event scene to showcase the talent that NXT had in its ranks. The final entrant was scheduled to be R-Truth after he won the Mixed Match Challenge with Carmella. However, Nia Jax attacked him and took his spot, becoming the fourth woman to enter a Men's Royal Rumble match. She attacked - and eliminated - Mustafa Ali, but soon after that she received a superkick, a 619 and an RKO before being eliminated.
The 2019 Royal Rumble event initially had top spot on this list due to its consistent match quality and fan favourite ending, as well as the surprise returns and debuts for superstars that the WWE Universe admired - however, after the most recent pay-per-view, it had to be moved down a step, in order to allow for 2020's show to sit at the top.
