Ranking Every WWE Royal Rumble Since 2010
6. 2017
Evolution is a mystery, but their success is not.
Each of the members of Evolution has won at least one Royal Rumble in their career and in fitting fashion, Randy Orton captured his second in 2017. At the time, Orton was involved in a storyline with Bray Wyatt and Luke Harper as a member of the Wyatt Family. He would go on to turn on Wyatt and face him for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 33, which was given negative reviews by many WWE fans.
Also, during the event, John Cena took on AJ Styles for the WWE Championship and defeated the 'Phenomenal One' to capture his record 16th world championship in WWE. This match is often regarded as the match of the night, with both Styles and Cena executing outstanding manoeuvres and creating an air of unpredictability around their match. The chemistry between both men is evident throughout the contest and the WWE Universe in San Antonio appeared to support Cena's victory.
As with every pay-per-view event, there were also some bad moments. Sending Roman Reigns into the Rumble at number 30 was definitely one of them. The fans in attendance were anticipating a big return or potential surprise as the final entrant - they were left reeling after the 'Big Dog' appeared - and the crowd began to turn on Reigns yet again. It appeared as though WWE didn't know how to handle Roman Reigns at the Royal Rumble, with this being the third consecutive year that he was booed, even while booked as a face.
The opening title bout between Reigns and Owens - which saw Chris Jericho suspended above the ring in a shark cage - was given a mild reaction, with 'Y2J' being the saving grace, due to his natural comedic ability. Also, Orton's victory in the main event was so well-received because the WWE Universe had decided that they would cheer anyone over Roman Reigns. Thankfully, from this point onwards, it seems as though WWE learnt their lesson when it came to the January pay-per-view.
