Just when WWE had got things right with Edge's Rumble victory, they decided that it was time to mess with the formula.

In 2011, the Royal Rumble gained an extra ten men, with the first and only 40-man Rumble match taking place. As expected, this led to more surprises and open spots that allowed for memorable moments. This match saw the return of 'Big Daddy Cool' Diesel, as well as the surprise appearance of Booker T - both of these unexpected appearances drew huge pops from the WWE fans in Boston.

The WWE Universe was fully behind 'The Milan Miracle', Santino Marella during the build to the event, however, no-one genuinely believed that he might win the whole thing. This meant that his dramatic reveal as the last man alongside Alberto Del Rio received a hugely positive reaction - until he was unceremoniously thrown out of the ring by 'The Essence of Excellence'. Del Rio won the historic match and earned himself a title match at WrestleMania against Edge, in what would be Edge's final match.

Also during the pay-per-view, Dolph Ziggler tried (and failed) to capture the World Heavyweight Championship from 'The Rated-R Superstar', in what many consider to be the best match of the night. Both superstars put on an outstanding performance, as did The Miz and Randy Orton in their WWE Championship bout.

This show was an example of WWE changing the formula and making an improvement, which no-one expected after previous examples of poor decision making. Overall, this show was a success and the matches were all impressive, unfortunately, the Royal Rumble events started to go downhill from there - that is, until 2018.
