Let’s get the ending out of the way early - yes, Jon Stewart gets involved, yes, the former Daily Show host limply hits Cena with a chair, yes, these are the means by which Seth Rollins gets the win and becomes simultaneous WWE and US champion. It remains a very stupid and annoying finish.

That’s only a tiny part of the match, though, and otherwise, this is an absolute blast. It’s another step up for Rollins, whose title run had started to lose a bit of momentum, and the shot in the arm given to him by hanging with Cena was invaluable.

More impressive still is Cena’s ability to hang with Rollins. With the younger man poised as WWE’s future, Cena knows he needs to step up his game, and he does so with gusto, supplementing his usual power game by busting out the figure four and other deep cuts from his arsenal.

Cena’s US title run was legendary, pitting him against the kind of guys he wouldn’t normally fight, and 9/10ths of this cracking match are a fitting ending to a particularly enjoyable time in (slightly less) Big Match John’s career.
