Much like The Undertaker's American Badass phase, unmasked Kane was a limited concept, and in 2011 it had started become stale. In other words, it was time for Kane to go back to his roots.

The Big Red Machine missed much of the year after being injured by Mark Henry. During an episode of Raw in mid-December, John Cena went one-on-one with the World's Strongest Man and, in one of the most jaw-dropping moments of the year, Kane made his way down to the aisle with a brand new look. Dressed in completely new attire, the Big Red Monster was wearing a visor that was reminiscent of the Predator mask worn by the eponymous creature in the popular film franchise.

In an interesting turn of events, Kane didn't target Mark Henry and, instead, he attacked Cena, leaving the Leader of The Cenation out cold in the centre of the ring. Removing his outer mask, Kane revealed yet another underneath, which was perhaps even more terrifying. For the first time in eight years, the true Kane was back.

This return led to one of the Demon's most compelling storylines yet, as he attempted to rid WWE of all of its positivity, wanting everyone to embrace their inner darkness - which is why he attacked Cena. In short, Cena stands for everything that this iteration of Kane was trying to destroy, so he made the face of WWE his primary target.
