During 2001, Kane had been out of action after having his arm shattered by the Two-Man Power Trip. In his absence, The Undertaker challenged Steve Austin to a fight on SmackDown, but when the Texas Rattlesnake didn't respond to his challenge, 'Taker decided to take matters into his own hands by stealing Stone Cold's WWE Championship belt and his jacket.

Vince refused to let Austin come down to the ring while weapons were lying about, so after ridding the arena of every steel chair, Stone Cold made his way to the ring and exchanged blows with The Phenom. But the whole thing turned out to be a trap orchestrated by the Brothers of Destruction, as Triple H was out of the building which left Austin vulnerable.

The crowd cheered at the top of their lungs as Kane's music sounded, and The Big Red Machine made a surprising return. He then reunited with The Undertaker as they sought revenge.
