Rock vs. Ric is a bona fide dream match, and for once at WrestleMania, it actually lives up to expectations. Sure, fantasy bookers may not have included messrs Foley, Orton, and Bautista, but it works out for the best that they do.

The young guns are there for the rub, two promising but green performers enjoying the big stage for the first time. Both are played to their strengths, with Orton the entitled, preening heel, Batista the big guy doing big guy things. Foley is there to bring the heart and soul, and, let’s be honest, to take the pin.

But the meat of the match? Well, that’s The Man and The Great One facing off for the first time, two impossibly charismatic stars putting on a show for the crowd. The Rock steals Flair’s strut and hurls the veteran around; Flair returns the favour with some trademark chops. He’s really in the pocket here as far as his WWE run goes, and it’s pure entertainment.

No one’s working especially hard here, but that’s not the point. The match serves to elevate some new guys, celebrate some old guys, and give the fans something lighthearted and totally enjoyable, and it succeeds entirely.
