Ranking The Rock's WWE WrestleMania Matches From Worst To Best
4. Vs. John Cena (WrestleMania XXVIII)
This is the level of success WWE will be hoping Reigns/Rock can match. The company bet big on the idea fans would clamour to see these two titans of their eras face off, and it over-delivered in terms of attendance and PPV buys.
It was a patient build the likes of which they’re rarely capable of. The match was set up almost a year prior, the night after ‘Mania XXVII. From there, the two tore strips off each other on the mic, Cena going after Rock for his part time status, Rock spoofing Cena’s dayglo, kid-friendly image.
When they finally got to the ring, we were ready for it. Action-wise, it’s not amazing; Rocky’s rust is apparent, and Cena was far from his dynamic best during this period. For spectacle, though, it takes some beating, with the crowd adoring The Rock and giving poor old John the dog’s abuse.
To his credit, Cena totally leans into this, and his cockiness and treatment of the crowd is his undoing. He pinches the People’s Elbow, only for the Great One to pop up and plant him with a Rock Bottom for the three. So much hard work and effort went into this one, and they actually pulled it off.
