WWE's traditional December malaise was back after a year off, not least with SmackDown in the slot.

Known as a safer haven for WWE's much-maligned workrate guys, the blue brand was still a booking wasteland. Never was that clearer than during the the split-supershow era. Yet another Undertaker/Randy Orton encounter needed Hell In A Cell to try and elevate the stakes, and everybody else was coasting all the way to Christmas on the undercard.
