Ranking Tommaso Ciampa's 10 Greatest NXT Matches
2. Vs. Johnny Gargano - TakeOver: Brooklyn 4
The final match (for a bit) in Gargano and Ciampa’s all- consuming feud was already personal enough without gold on the line, but surprisingly the addition of Ciampa’s coveted NXT title added yet more drama to the rubber match rather than muddying the waters. Many will plump for the unsanctioned match as the programme’s finest, but the inventiveness and devilish ending of the Brooklyn IV showpiece tips it over the edge.
Here it’s a last man standing match, and it’s up there with the finest the stipulation has ever produced. It’s all out carnage from the off. The announce tables fall victim to an Air Raid Crash early doors. Not satisfied with the exposed concrete spot, this time the ring mat is ripped up for some killer DDTs on the wooden boards.
Poetically, the match’s conclusion takes place up on the stage, the location for Ciampa’s great betrayal. The champ is handcuffed to a rail and begs mercy from Gargano. Johnny considers it, then drops the knee pad and hits one last thunderous strike. But his descent into wrath is his undoing. The attack sends him flying off the stage; both men are down, but before the 10 count, Ciampa rolls from the platform, to his feet, and escapes once more.
