What happened: Following a clean victory over John Cena in a classic SummerSlam encounter, AJ Styles could no longer be denied. He was the hottest star on either brand, and he was rewarded with a WWE World Championship shot at Dean Ambrose at September's Backlash event. The first split-brand PPV of the new era ended with a bang - at the end of a strong match, Styles hit Ambrose with a low blow, then delivered the Styles Clash to add yet another world championship to his impressive resume.

Why it was good: Styles really deserved to become WWE World Champion at Backlash, but given the way WWE tends to book, there was always doubt. The company could have let Ambrose (who had been getting progressively less entertaining as champion) pick up the first win in the feud before putting Styles over later, but that would have killed "The Phenomenal One's" momentum. Instead, cooler heads prevailed and he made good on his first crack at "The Lunatic Fringe." While the low blow meant that his win wasn't entirely clean, most fans were willing to forgive it, given the circumstances under which Kevin Owens won the Universal Title weeks earlier.
