The WWE has brought back the King of the Ring. It was announced during Extreme Rules that the famous tournament will return to WWE television for the first time since 2010. Preliminary matches were held on the Monday 27th Raw, with the finals to be shown live on the WWE Network the following day. The news has been greeted with excitement by longtime fans. The King of the Ring was a WWE institution, with the first tournament held in 1985. From there the event grew and grew, eventually becoming its own pay-per-view in 1993. Traditionally the event would comprise a one night tournament where the winner would have to wrestle (and win) three matches to become champion, although the format changed over the years. WWE used the tournament in the past to create/cement stars. Several Hall of Famers have a King of the Ring win on their resumé. For some wrestlers, the King of the Ring was a pivotal moment in their careers. For others, not so much. It has been a bit of a mixed bag, in terms of what the eventual winners went on to accomplish and how their careers ended up. So with the nineteenth King of the Ring due to be crowned, let's go back and rank the previous eighteen winners, from worst to best.
