This one is pretty self-explanatory. Austin and Triple H were always going to clash on multiple occasions throughout 1999, as WWE were determined to make The Game an established top-tier star. The best way to do that was for him to rack up a couple of major wins against the biggest wrestling star on the planet, Steve Austin. The Texas Rattlesnake wasn't thrilled with the prospect, however, and it has been said that he outright refused to put Triple H over at SummerSlam (Austin has said this may have been the case but that he cannot remember specifics). He would only do the J.O.B for his friend Mick Foley, who then dropped the title to Hunter the next evening on Raw. After Triple H became Champion there was the whole nonsense of Vince winning the title and then vacating it, only for Triple H to come out the eventual winner in the Six Pack Challenge match at Unforgiven. What a pointless title switch that was, in retrospect. It would be far more compelling to have Triple H and Austin go at it in a singles match. The did compete against each other at No Mercy the following month, anyway, so why not have their first match at Unforgiven? Then you can do a gimmick rematch the next month, after ending the Unforgiven outing in controversy. Triple H would retain the title here, after some sort of shenanigans involving Vince McMahon.
