Having recently made his return to WWE TV, Sheamus has opened up about his disappointment at missing WrestleMania 41 and how he'd pitched to be involved in the Intercontinental Championship picture at this year's Showcase of the Immortals.

In an interview with Mail Sport to promote WWE's recently announced UK and Ireland tour for this August, the Celtic Warrior explained how, despite being involved in plenty of WrestleManias over the years, he was still "gutted" to have missed 'Mania 41.

As Sheamus put it:

"I was gutted that I wasn't at 'Mania. The last appearance that I had was at the Rumble. I want to be in the mix. I want to be there. I'm more passionate now about my job than I have ever been. Some guys are like, 'You've been at so many WrestleManias, so it's okay'. But it's not okay. I love what I do. I love going out there in front of a crowd. I love putting banger after banger. I love that intensity."

Where the Intercontinental Championship is concerned, that's famously the one title that has eluded Sheamus during his time on the WWE main roster. At WrestleMania 41, it was Dominik Mysterio walking out with the Intercontinental Title after winning a fatal four-way bout featuring Finn Balor, Penta, and then-IC Champ Bron Breakker.

On trying to get into the Intercontinental Title scene for WrestleMania 41, Sheamus noted:

"I had pitched to hopefully get in the Intercontinental Title stuff again. They're probably tired about me talking about it, but that's the one title that I have left to become the first ever ultimate Grand Slam Champion in WWE. That's the Holy Grail, that's it. But I wasn't happy sitting at home. I don't want to miss WrestleMania, I don't want to go there and not be part of the biggest show of the year. It's tough for me. I don't care, if you have passion for what you do, you don't want to miss that."

As alluded to, since landing on the WWE main roster in 2009, Sheamus is a three-time WWE Champion, a one-time World Heavyweight Champion, a three-time United States Champion, a five-time Tag Team Champion with Cesaro as the Bar, a Royal Rumble winner, a King of the Ring winner, and a Mr. Money in the Bank. However, there's still no Intercontinental Championship on the 47-year-old's résumé.

Sheamus has had numerous shots at the Intercontinental Title throughout his WWE career - the most recent being at non-televised live events against Bron Breakker earlier this year - but that prestigious prize remains out of reach for the Irishman.

For someone like Sheamus, he grew up at a time when the Intercontinental Championship was the workhorse belt held by legends like Randy Savage, Ricky Steamboat, Mr. Perfect, Bret Hart, and Shawn Michaels. As such, that title is held on a special pedestal for those modern-day wrestlers of a certain age.
