SummerSlam By The Numbers WWE DON'T Want You To Remember
2. 69
SummerSlam 2016's main event between Brock Lesnar and Randy Orton was presented like an MMA fight. There was no angle preceding it, just the stark announcement of a match we were all supposedly salivating to see, with the promise that two sluggers would mash lumps out of one another.
On the night, one of them did - literally.
A TKO finish was perfectly sensible in the context of the build, but the subterfuge in its presentation was anything but. The match concluded with Brock lamping Randy so hard that he busted him open, forcing a ref stoppage. Except that ending wasn't safely expedited with a blade; WWE, through some perverse logic, reasoned such barbarism wouldn't fly, so instead had the ex-UFC champ literally smash Randy around the head.
In total, The Beast walloped the prone Orton a total of 69 times, causing a sick pool of blood to collect on the canvas. Admittedly, the majority of those strikes were, if not entirely worked, at least pulled. But amongst them were five or six ludicrously sharp elbows, bludgeoning Randy's skull as well as any concerns over CTE. It's a scene that may one day come back to haunt WWE in court.
