10 Best Wrestling Suplex Variations

7. Delayed Vertical Suplex

The vertical suplex is probably older than the hills, but the delayed version of it is still something that brings out gasps from crowds today. I will always associate this move with ‘The British Bulldog’ Davey Boy Smith, and many big guy competitors even up to ‘The Big Guy’ today, Ryback, have used it. In fact, the main purpose the delayed vertical suplex is for larger competitors to assert their physical dominance over their opponents.

The set up for the move is simple, to say the least. A front face lock is applied and the poor casualty is lifted up above the mighty steed applying the move. Instead of merely dropping back onto the mat, at this point the dupe is held in position for a while, allowing the blood to rush into his head increasing the damage caused by the move. All the while, the victim is basically defenceless, at the mercy of the man performing the move. Even today, 25 years after I first saw it, this move impresses.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
