That Time DX Were So Hated WWF Fans RIOTED House Show

It wasn't new ground for Shawn Michaels and Triple H at the time, but the drama, in this case, was cut from an altogether more rancid cloth. Regularly drawing what Dave Meltzer referred to in the Wrestling Observer as "old-fashioned heel heat" in other arenas at the time, the red-hot sh*thouses weren't shying away from the rising aggravation from the crowd until a tossed something struck 'HBK' in the head.

Already-rotten attitude made worse, Michaels got on the house microphone and said "FOR ALL OF YOU THROWING ALL THE SH*T INSIDE THE RING. YOU JUST LOST YOUR MAIN EVENT!"

The atmosphere predictably worsened when the ring announcer confirmed Michaels' assertions after DX bailed from the scene. According to Meltzer and various fans in attendance, fans launched litter, chairs and even flaming toilet roll into the ring as security profoundly failed at securing anybody or anything.

First-hand reports were brilliantly salvaged by Google's restoration of the rec-sport-pro-wrestling newsgroups from the time, with particular ones offering frightening insights into a situation out of hand beyond even the most hedonistic violence the Attitude Era regularly promised. Grainy photos that later surfaced added to the mystique, but the slow speed (and broader media disinterest) in wrestling news at the time highlights how fortunate Vince McMahon was.
