The 24/7 Championship Is Actually The Best Thing In WWE Today

A lot of this is owed to the man at the centre of the division, four time and longest reigning champion R-Truth. In an era when the key to getting over rests on affability as much as ability, the veteran's effortlessly endearing act was ripe to make supporters of the disappointed and disinvested. It's almost impossible to dislike the former Ron Killings, whose institutionalised tenure ironically seems to give him creative freedom. From the moment of his first ad-hoc promo - notably filmed independently and away from the toxic auspices of WWE TV - people were starting to realise, "hey, maybe they're onto something."

And that's really the crux: in being implicitly defined as worthless, the 24/7 crew paradoxically have the opportunity to generate their own worth. By not micro-managing micro-skits, the gaggle of underutilised talent are presented an exceedingly rare chance for improv. From the least organic of origins, the title has created a stage for organic character development; already, it's began to make, if not stars, minor nebulas of Drake Maverick and ECIII - two men who must have already had one eye on Jacksonville. And lo and behold, it's entertaining.

Off-the-cuff backstage sketches with tongues firmly planted in the corner of cheeks? Where have we heard this before?

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
