The 8 Faces Of Kenny Omega

2. Golden Idol

Kenny Omega
NJPW

Something strange happened to Omega after his lost to Okada at Wrestle Kingdom. Blind ambition and hunger had driven Omega on a dark, relentless ascension since 2014. For the most part, it had worked. Every year Omega ascended the rigid hierarchy of NJPW, vaulting many along the way. His cutthroat tactics and Bullet Club back up had led him from overlooked to the main event of Wrestle Kingdom. But at the final hurdle he collapsed.

Kenny lost and it seemed, for the first time, he had taken a step back to reflect on who he had become. His insatiable ambition had driven Kenny to become the best wrestler in the world, but at a heavy cost. Omega had betrayed: friends, leaders, mentors, and stablemates. He had even turned his back on who he really was... that goofy little Canadian kid who loved pro-wrestling and video games. He had become a selfish, callous pro-wrestler just like his former trainers in DSW.

The transformation from callous 'Best Bout Machine' to 'Golden Idol took place through 2017-2018. He became calmer, his golden curls had returned and Ibushi was back by his side. This change took physical form as Kenny had dropped some muscle, returned to his natural blonde and reintroduced colour back to his ensemble. He looked like the literal fallen angel risen again.

Beautifully he captured his white whale, the IWGP heavyweight title, with his friends around him and Ibushi by his side, looking like a combination of the 'Cleaner' and the sparky junior heavyweight he had once been.
