The Defining WWE Moment Of Every Year This Decade
7. 2013 - The Beginning Of The 'Yes Movement'
In 2013, pro wrestling needed something special. It needed a superstar that could unite the fans against a common enemy. Little did anyone expect that to be the 'Ultimate Underdog', Daniel Bryan.
Bryan worked tirelessly throughout 2013, jumping over hurdle after hurdle against the likes of The Shield, The Authority and splitting from his Team Hell No partner, Kane. After a successful reign as Tag Team Champions, the tandem split, seeking individual success instead. This came relatively quickly to Bryan, as he was starting to be considered the best wrestler in the world by fans and executives in the company. Due to this unexpected crowd popularity, Daniel Bryan was given the opportunity to face John Cena for the WWE title at SummerSlam 2013.
Vince McMahon saw Daniel Bryan as an unworthy contender, with him being viewed as "too small" to be a believable world champion. However, the crowd reaction for the former 'American Dragon' was undeniable, as was the pop when he defeated Cena in a shock upset victory, even with Triple H as the special guest referee. The Staples Center erupted as Bryan's arm was raised as the new WWE Champion - but not for long. Randy Orton's music hit and Triple H attacked Bryan to allow Orton to cash-in his Money In The Bank briefcase and steal the title from Bryan. The heat Orton generated seemed to be entirely genuine and this night will forever be considered the beginning of the 'Yes! Movement'.
