The Greatest Match From Every WWE SummerSlam Ever
21. 1999 - Test Vs. Shane McMahon
On paper, Shane McMahon vs the late Andrew 'Test' Martin doesn’t sound like an exciting proposition. At the height of the Attitude Era, though, the supreme silliness of this match overwhelms the limitations of the performers to create a fast, fun, and incredibly watchable encounter.
From the off, the stipulation is ridiculous - Test must defeat Shane in order to continue his relationship with Stephanie McMahon - and the mayhem only stacks up from there. Shane’s childhood pals The Mean Street Posse watch on from an old sofa at ringside, but quickly get involved, culminating with Shane smashing a photo of the gang over Test’s head.
The boss’ son hits a trademark flying elbow from the ring to the announce table, but Test, at his heroic best, powers back, and with Pat Patterson and Jerry Briscoe wiping out the posse, eventually gets the win.
Test never rose to the heights some thought he would, but his potential is clear enough here. This is a virtuous performance in a match low on technique, but packed with incident.
